The Evolution of Gaming

May 19, 2024

Gaming isn’t just a pastime; it’s a cultural phenomenon that has reshaped how we play and connect with friends and strangers. From the clatter of pinball machines to the immersive worlds of PC gaming, the evolution of this industry is a testament to human ingenuity and creativity. Join us on a journey through time as we explore the history of gaming and its profound impact on entertainment and how payments are the latest innovation to hit the industry.

The Genesis of all gaming: Bagatelle

In the late 18th century, the game of Bagatelle emerged as a popular pastime among the French. It was invented by a Frenchman named Montague Redgrave, who was granted a US patent in 1871 for his “Improvements in Bagatelle”. The game originally involved players using a cue stick to shoot balls into holes on a board, scoring points based on where the balls landed.

Evolution into Pinball

Bagatelle’s popularity spread throughout Europe and America, evolving into what we now know as pinball. The addition of a coiled spring and plunger,  along with a smaller playing field and marbles replacing balls, transformed the game into a more compact and dynamic form.

The mechanisms in a pinball machine that bounce the ball off them when hit are called bumpers.

Bumpers are mushroom-shaped knobs of different colors about two inches in diameter with rings around them near the top and a bulb inside. When the ball hits a bumper, the bulb switches on and a solenoid pulls the ring down to kick the ball away. At the same time, switches below the bumper turn on a loudspeaker to emit a loud thump or a bell might ring.

The first modern-looking, coin-operated pinball machine was created by Raymond Maloney in 1932. Unable to secure stock of the then-popular game “Baffle Ball”, Maloney decided to found Lion Manufacturing and produced his own game: “Ballyhoo”. This marked the invention of the modern pinball machine as we know it today.

The Rise of Arcade Games: Space Invaders

Fast forward to the late 1970s, and arcade games took the world by storm. Space Invaders, with its iconic alien enemies and relentless gameplay, became a cultural phenomenon. It not only showcased the potential of gaming as a form of entertainment but also laid the foundation for future innovations in the industry.

The arcade game Space Invaders was invented by Tomohiro Nishikado, a Japanese video game developer and engineer. It was released to the public in 1978. The game was developed and released by the Taito Corporation of Japan. Space Invaders is often credited as the first shoot ’em up game and is considered to have begun the golden age of arcade video games.

The Advent of PC Gaming

The first game that was developed for a computer was a version of Tic-Tac-Toe known as OXO, programmed by A.S. Douglas in 1952 at the University of Cambridge1. However, this game was not intended for personal computers, but was part of Douglas’s Ph.D. thesis on Human-Computer interaction.

The first game that is commonly recognized as the first PC game is Spacewar!, invented by Steve Russell, an MIT student, in 1962. This game was created as a demonstration program for the school’s new PDP-1 computer

The 1970s and 1980s saw the rise of PC gaming, bringing games like “Zork” and “MUD1” into the homes of millions. This era marked a shift towards more accessible and immersive gaming experiences, setting the stage for the industry’s explosive growth in the decades to come.

The Current State: Embedded Payments and In-Game Purchases

Today, gaming has evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry, thanks in part to innovative payment models like embedded payments and in-game purchases. These strategies not only drive revenue for developers but also enhance the gaming experience for players, creating a win-win situation for all involved.
