The Global Diaspora

January 22, 2023

Diaspora is a term that refers to the movement of people away from their home countries, whether it be for political, economic, or personal reasons. In recent years, the phenomenon of diaspora has become increasingly prevalent on a global scale, with individuals from all corners of the world leaving their homes in search of better opportunities.

In this blog post, we will take a closer look at four specific regions that have seen a significant number of their citizens emigrate: the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Latin America (LATAM), Africa, and Asia.

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has seen a significant number of its citizens emigrate in recent years and in 2022 that number was estimated to be in the region of 30 million adults. Countries like Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen have been plagued by political turmoil and economic instability, leading many individuals to seek stability and prosperity abroad. Additionally, many individuals from the Gulf States have also emigrated, driven by a desire for better education and career opportunities.

Latin America (LATAM) has also seen a significant number of its citizens emigrate in recent years and that number was estimated in 2022 at 17 million. Countries like Venezuela, Honduras, and Nicaragua have been facing political instability and economic crisis, leading many of their citizens to flee in search of stability and better living conditions. Additionally, countries like Mexico and Guatemala have a high poverty rate and lack of job opportunities, which has led to many of their citizens to migrate to the United States in search of work. On the other hand, countries like Brazil and Argentina have seen a significant number of their citizens leave for other reasons, such as education and career opportunities.

Africa is a continent that has seen a significant number of its citizens emigrate in recent years and it has one of the largest diaspora estimated in 2022 at 170 million. Many individuals have left their home countries in search of better opportunities, driven by factors such as poverty, unemployment, and political instability. Additionally, many individuals have also emigrated to escape the violence and conflict that has plagued many African countries in recent years.

Asia is a region that has seen a significant number of its citizens emigrate in recent years and it is estimated that there are over 100 million. Countries like China, India, and Bangladesh have experienced rapid economic growth in recent years, but the pace of this growth has not been evenly distributed. This has led many individuals to seek better opportunities abroad, driven by factors such as poverty, unemployment, and lack of opportunities in their home countries. Additionally, many individuals from Southeast Asian countries have also emigrated to escape the political instability and violence that has plagued many of these countries in recent years.

Let us know which countries you would like us to highlight in these regions in next weeks blog as we dive deep into each region to discover the life and experience of Diaspora from these various regions and how they still keep connected with family and friends from their birth countries and how Empowch is creating a unique opportunity to empower these communities.
